Pool and gardens
Your Tai Chi and Trails retreat package includes breakfast, lunch and evening meals. The vegetarian food, prepared by your hosts, Rita and Marb, is primarily organic produce from the kitchen garden. What cannot be grown is sourced locally, be it fresh cheese, wild lavender honey or the very yummy 'Pastel de Nata', a typical Portuguese custard tart with cinnamon.
Organic juices are available, using only the freshest vegetables and fruit. A selection of herbal teas is also available throughout your stay. The house produces approximately 300 litres of olive oil from the 80 or so olive trees. As a result, this is served daily with home-baked bread, used in dressings and store cupboard items such as preserved lemons. Great wine is sourced from local producers and is available throughout the retreat. Upon request, we can cater for gluten and lactose-free diets.
Typical buffet breakfast
Muesli/selection of cereals
Yoghurt with selection of fresh fruit
Toast with homemade conserves
Fresh juice, selection of teas or coffee
Mature cheddar with wilted lettuce and onion tart served with green salad
Home-baked cake of the day served with tea or coffee
Sun dried tomato and black olive sausages served with sweet potato mash

Gray Caws Retreat Leader
Gray is a master ChiRunning and Oxygen Advantage Coach and Teacher Trainer based in the UK. He is also a specialist Personal Trainer and Buteyko Practitioner. He brings his practice and teaching skills learned over the years to organsing, leading and coaching worldwide retreats. He believes that taking time out of the usual everyday routine, exploring different environments, learning new and fine-tuning existing skills, helps us to gain a clearer mental focus and deeper insight into ourselves. And therefore a great way to reset mind and body. Alongside his regular movement practice, Gray enjoys reading, researching and keeping up-to-date with the latest developments in health and fitness. His teaching style is relaxed, encouraging clients to question, experiment and experience.
I'm delighted to be running this brand new retreat for 2020 in Portugal. The aim of the retreat is to give you the time and space to reset, re-energise, and refocus your mind and body. The central theme throughout all of my retreats is that of mindful movement. This simply means having an intention and paying attention to how and why you move. And what better way to experience this than in like-minded company and amazing surroundings practicing daily ChiRunning, Tai Chi, qigong, breathwork and meditation.
Tevor Taylor Tai Chi and Qigong Instructor
Trevor has been involved in martial arts since he was 6 years old. As a child and teenager, he learned judo from his father, who is a Black Belt 3rd Dan. He has 35 years experience of Tai Chi and was a registered instructor of The Tai Chi Union of Great Britain for many years. He also studied Shotokai Karate for 10 years.
In my life I've done many things. I started out as a mechanic and after finishing my apprenticeship travelled all over Europe and the Middle East, ending up on the Isle of Skye where I lived in a commune for 6 years. It was there that I started to learn Tai Chi and have kids. After this I moved to Spain with my family where we bought an abandoned olive farm. We were there for 25 years and gradually we restored the land and houses. In the process I worked restoring other old farms and assorted building projects until I quit this line of work to focus more on Tai Chi and producing quality organic olive oil from our farm. I also played celtic music in a local band, which is another love of my life.
In 2011 I relocated to the foothills of the Serra de Estrella mountains in Portugal where I am regenerating a woodland. This project is very exciting as I've always been passionate about all aspects of wood lands, forest renewal and conservation.
Hello from Rita, I’m looking forward to welcoming you on our first Tai Chi & Trails Retreat. My family moved to Portugal from England back in 2011. We found Quinta das Latas and were completely blown away by the breathtaking and far reaching views that this Beiras mountain range offers. In the last eight years we have adapted to the quiet mountain life, learnt a new language, renovated this amazing 1911 country manor house, converted a stone barn for our personal accommodation together with the studio, where we run creative workshops and retreats.
We collaborate with talented artists and instructors from all over the world, to bring inspiring and restful holidays for those that want to take time for themselves.
Latas Country House is surrounded by raw beauty. It sits peacefully within the quiet Portuguese countryside, offering tranquillity and seclusion from the outside world, with a more gentle approach to day-to-day living. Here one can truly switch off, retreat, and rest.
Here we grow our own organic veggies, keep chickens, maintain the olive grove and land. We take long mountain walks with our two dogs Sattva and Asha and in the summer months when temperatures are high, there's nothing more refreshing than taking a picnic down to the local wild river swimming spot for a dip.
We love to cook, to eat, to laugh, enjoy a good glass of wine, and meet new friends. We look forward very much to welcoming you in September!
